The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with its partners hosted a two-day Workshop and Trade Fair on Liberia ’s Oil Palm Industry.
The Workshop took place on January 21 – 22 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex and linked key oil palm industry stakeholders and encouraged increased value chain participation for sustainable investment in Liberia ’s oil palm sub-sector.
National, regional and international specialists in the oil palm industry facilitated the workshop deliberations and showcased their capabilities in oil palm activities such as traditional and mechanical milling, kernel processing, oil palm cuisine, soap making and morel, among others.
Agriculture Minister, Dr. Florence Chenoweth said this initiative will guide Liberia towards understanding the demand for developing a National Oil Palm Master Plan that will promote equitable economic growth and environmental sustainability in line with Liberia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS).
Three international Non-Governmental organizations, Mercy Corps, Winrock International and the Sustainable Tree Crops Program collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture to organize this two day event.
During the workshop, panel discussions ensued after the presentations with a view to further simplify the contents of the topics for the benefit of the participants in particular and the public in general.
Some of the topics discussed include Global Trends in Oil Palm over the last 40 years, current status of Liberia ’s oil palm sector and value chain as well as oil palm as food security and cash crop for Liberians.
