Monrovia, (PMU-MoA) – June 15, 2020; The Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Regional Development, Research and Extension Dr. George T. Forpoh, says the rebirth of rural community financing for the agriculture sector provides a great opportunity to increase food production in the country. He said, rural community financing in the agriculture sector is a new shift at the Agriculture Ministry under Minister Jeanine Milly Cooper and the intent is to ensure that farmers have enough food for households and the market”.
Speaking at ceremonies marking the dedication and presentation of 16 new motorbikes to Rural Community Financial Institutions in the country through the Technical Assistance & Support Unit at the Central Bank of Liberia, Deputy Minister Forpoh assured that transforming agriculture as a business will require the support of all stakeholders noting that the ministry is well positioned to achieve this objective.
According to the Project Coordinator Mr. Emmanuel Vah, the Rural Community Finance Project (RCFP) is intended to build the institutional capacity of 12 existing Rural Community Finance
Institutions (RCFIs) and support the creation of additional 10 new RCFIs to provide the opportunity for rural farmers to buy shares and play active leadership roles in rural financial institutions.
The Deputy Director for General Services at the Central Bank of Liberia Ms. Ophelia Nene Hoff who received the keys to the motorbikes on behalf of Central Bank Executive Governor Mr. Jolue Aloysius Tarlu thanked the Ministry of Agriculture for the farsighted support and assured that the motorbikes will be used in enhancing rural community financing in rural Liberia.
In his closing remarks, the Acting Director of the Program Management Unit at the Ministry of Agriculture Mr. Ansu S. Konneh thanked the International Fund for Agricultural Development and all donor institutions for support to the agriculture sector assuring that food security and nutrition remains a key priority of the national government.
