President Weah Praises Agriculture Minister at Cabinet Meeting
(Monrovia, February 5, 2021): - His Excellency President George Manneh Weah, Sr., has lauded the Minister of Agriculture, Jeanine Milly Cooper, for the progress thus far made in the agriculture sector and urged her to do as she gets his fullest support.
President Weah was impressed after she made a detailed presentation on the activities, progress, achievements and challenges in the agriculture as she marks a year in office this month after being named as Minister of Agriculture.
“I was told you are the best in terms of changing the dynamics of agriculture in the country, and that you can help make my dreams of “Made in Liberia” come true. You have so far exhibited that. I want you to do more”, the Liberian Leader as contained in a dispatch from the Executive Mansion.
The Presidential Dispatch quotes the Liberian Chief Executive as saying, “agriculture, the second flagship program of the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD), remains a priority as my government embarks on making Liberia food secure and improving the livelihood of Liberians”.
President Weah also announced he will attend this year’s National Agriculture Fair which the Ministry of Agriculture is planning and executing from February 12 to 14 in CARI, Suakoko, Bong County to showcase agriculture produce and plant-based products grown and processed in Liberia.
Moreover, the Dispatch notes the President’s happiness over the discovery of several hundred hectares of farmland in Grand Cape Mount owned by the Government of Liberia.
His Excellency instructed Minister Cooper to ensure all government farms are cultivated this year starting with the farm in Grand Cape Mount.
“I will lead the entire cabinet to plant rice and crops by April this year. Living by example is cardinal. If we are to achieve our goals in transforming the agriculture sector, we need to participate in it fully.”, President Weah instructed.
In January, Minister Cooper inspected a 1,200-hectare of farmland owned by the Government of Liberia in Teh Town, Garwulah District in Grand Cape Mount County to work out means of activating the farm to enhance local food production either through the private sector or private public partnership.
The farmland is located 65 km west of Monrovia and precisely 4 km off the Ibrahim Babangida Highway along the dirt road towards, Robertsport, the main town in Grand Cape Mount. Residents in Teh said President William Tolbert established the farm in the 1970s and had rice and other food crops grown.
