Agriculture Ministry Hands Over Modern Markets in Nimba County to Boost Rural Trade and Agricultural Transformation

[Saclepea, Nimba County]– As part of its ongoing drive to transform agriculture and strengthen rural economies, the Ministry of Agriculture, under its Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP), has turned over five newly constructed modern markets in Nimba County, aimed at improving market access and expanding livelihood opportunities for farmers, traders, and small business owners.

The modern facilities, located in Saclepea, Flumpa, Tappita, Karnwee, and Ganta, were officially commissioned by Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, with funding support from the World Bank totaling more than US$950,000.

The modern markets are designed to improve trading conditions and strengthen agricultural value chains in rural Liberia. Each facility is equipped with a spacious warehouse, separate flush toilets for men and women, and solar-powered lighting, providing a clean, safe, and secure environment for commercial activities, including extended trading hours.

Speaking during the joint commissioning ceremony held in Saclepea, Minister Nuetah expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its continued partnership in strengthening Liberia’s agricultural sector. He described the completion of the markets as clear proof that development efforts are effectively reaching rural Liberia.

“On behalf of the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Agriculture, we extend our sincere thanks to the World Bank for ensuring the successful implementation of the RETRAP project,” Minister Nuetah said.

He also praised local authorities and the people of Nimba County for the strong support provided throughout the project’s implementation, emphasizing the importance of community ownership, maintenance, and security of the new market facilities  to ensure long-term sustainability.

“While the Government provided the resources, it was your cooperation and willingness that made the completion of these markets possible. This is a government investment, but the maintenance responsibility lies with you, particularly given your market leadership. We will be honored to see these buildings properly maintained,” he added.

The new markets provide improved safety, dignity, and better income opportunities for the beneficiaries—many of whom previously sold goods in open spaces or makeshift structures. The facilities also support the Government’s broader agenda to expand market access, promote local trade, and strengthen agricultural production and distribution systems.

Madam Winifred Goah, National Chairperson of the Liberia Marketing Association in Nimba County, welcomed the development, describing it as a turning point for marketers and farmers in the county.

“This is a bright day for us, not only because of the ceremony, but because these market buildings represent a new beginning for traders and farmers,” she said, noting that the facilities will protect marketers and their goods from harsh weather conditions.

The commissioning ceremony was filled with joy as women traders from all four towns broke into celebratory songs after the ribbon-cutting, showcasing the beneficiaries' shared optimism and excitement.

The commissioning of the five modern markets marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s rural development efforts. Through RETRAP and continued collaboration with development partners, the Ministry of Agriculture has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming agriculture, empowering rural entrepreneurs, and building resilient local economies.
