Liberia Launches Historic Nationwide Soil Mapping Campaign to Drive Agricultural Transformation

Bong County, Liberia – May 13, 2026 — In a major push to modernize Liberia’s agricultural sector and strengthen food security, the Ministry of Agriculture and partners have launched a nationwide soil sampling campaign under the Soil4Liberia Project, beginning in Bong County.

The campaign marks the start of a groundbreaking national effort to unlock the hidden potential beneath Liberia’s soil by generating the scientific data needed to guide smarter farming, better land management, and increased agricultural productivity.

In Bong County, field teams are currently conducting intensive soil sampling, soil profile analysis, and land-use assessments as part of an exercise that will eventually cover all 15 counties of Liberia. The campaign will gather critical information to determine which crops grow best in specific areas, which nutrients soils require, and how land can be managed more sustainably.

Once the findings are analyzed in the laboratory, they will be used to develop a series of national agricultural planning tools, including soil suitability, fertility, nutrition, acidity, land use, and land cover maps.

The initiative will also lead to the creation of Liberia’s first National Digital Soil Information Center, a major milestone expected to revolutionize access to agricultural data in the country. Managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, the center will provide farmers, researchers, development partners, and policymakers with reliable soil information to support evidence-based agricultural development.

Funded by the European Union Delegation in Liberia through the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Soil4Liberia Project is being implemented in partnership with the University of Liberia Soil, Water and Plant Analysis Laboratory and the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), with the Ministry of Agriculture overseeing coordination and monitoring activities.

Speaking during the launch of the field campaign, Philip T. Singbah, Soil Specialist and Ministry of Agriculture Focal Person for the Soil4Liberia Project, described the initiative as a turning point for Liberia’s agricultural future.

“This is a transformative initiative for Liberia. The data we gather will empower our farmers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about crop selection, fertilizer use, and land management.”

The Bong County phase of the exercise is expected to continue for 21 days before teams move into other counties as part of the nationwide rollout.

The Soil4Liberia campaign comes at a critical time as Liberia intensifies efforts to boost domestic food production, reduce dependence on imports, and build a more resilient agricultural economy capable of feeding its growing population.
