Ministry of Agriculture Announces Arrival of 200 Muturu Cattle to Boost Liberia's Livestock Sector
Monrovia, Liberia – July 27, 2026 – The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the arrival of 200 live Muturu cattle from Guinea and Mali, marking a major milestone in the Government of Liberia's efforts to revitalize the livestock sector and strengthen national food production under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's Liberians Feed Yourselves Agenda.
Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah disclosed the cattle will be distributed to farmers in Grand Kru County, where the Government will also rehabilitate the county ranch through the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) to support sustainable livestock production.
The Muturu breed, sourced from Guinea and Mali, is renowned for its resilience, natural disease tolerance, adaptability to West African conditions, and strong reproductive capacity, making it ideal for expanding Liberia's national cattle herd.
The initiative is expected to boost local beef production, strengthen breeding programs, create economic opportunities for livestock farmers, and contribute to the Government's broader efforts to enhance national food security.
Dr. Nuetah described the initiative as part of the Government's broader strategy to strengthen food systems, increase domestic agricultural production, and create sustainable economic opportunities for Liberian farmers.
The Minister noted that the Government's investments across the agricultural sector are already producing measurable results.
"We are seeing the impact of the President's vision to ensure that Liberians produce more of what they eat. Today, more locally produced food is available on the market, and more Liberians, especially in rural communities, are consuming locally grown rice, our staple food," Dr. Nuetah said.
Providing an update on the country's food production drive, Dr. Nuetah disclosed that the Government has developed more than 16,000 hectares of lowland for rice cultivation, representing significant progress toward the national target of 50,000 hectares aimed at increasing domestic rice production and reducing Liberia's dependence on imported rice.
The Minister further revealed that the Government has developed over 1,200 hectares for cassava production while supporting 22 agricultural producers across the country to expand productivity, strengthen agricultural value chains, and improve market access.
He emphasized that these interventions are laying the foundation for a more resilient and productive agricultural sector capable of feeding the nation while improving rural livelihoods.
"All of these investments are meant to strengthen our capacity to produce our own food and ensure that Liberians eat what they grow," Dr. Nuetah emphasized.
The Ministry of Agriculture remains committed to implementing strategic investments and forging strong partnerships that expand agricultural production, strengthen livestock and crop value chains, create employment opportunities, and accelerate Liberia's journey toward food security and agricultural self-sufficiency.
